CONTEMPORARY INTERIOR DESIGN IN EDINBURGH

Case Study: Creating a Multi-functional and Pet-Friendly Contemporary Home in Edinburgh

Introduction:

In this case study, we delve into the transformation of residential space in Edinburgh, tailored to meet the needs and preferences of busy young professionals who sought a contemporary home that seamlessly integrates areas for work, entertainment, hobbies, and their beloved cat, Rocky. We embarked on a mission to create a stylish, functional, and pet-friendly environment that reflects their unique lifestyle. By incorporating custom spaces for their cat and designing bespoke furniture, we achieved a harmonious blend of practicality and modern elegance.

Preferences and Aesthetic:

Our clients expressed a preference for a contemporary design style, characterised by clean lines, minimalism, and a blend of comfort and sophistication. They desired a space that accommodates work requirements, provides ample room for entertaining, and caters to their hobbies. The design approach aimed to capture their vision by combining functionality, timeless style, and personalised touches that showcase their unique tastes.

Functional Requirements and Lifestyle Needs:

Understanding their dynamic lifestyle and multifaceted needs was crucial to crafting a space that seamlessly integrates work, entertainment, hobbies, and their pet. Skela Studio carefully curated versatile living spaces that provided dedicated areas for workstations, entertainment zones, and hobby corners. Creating an open-plan living concept allowed for easy flow and interaction between these different functional spaces.

Addressing Space Limitations:

Given the typical constraints of urban residences, optimising space utilisation was a priority. We employed space-saving techniques and custom storage solutions, such as built-in shelving units and multifunctional furniture, to maximise every square foot. Thoughtful consideration was given to room layouts and traffic flow to ensure that the space remained open and uncluttered, allowing for a comfortable coexistence of work, entertainment, hobbies, and pet-friendly areas.

Design Highlights:

  • Multi-functional Workspaces: Custom-designed workstations were created to meet the work-from-home needs. Ergonomic furniture, task lighting, and ample storage were seamlessly integrated into the design to provide a productive and inspiring work environment.
  • Carefully Considered Lighting by Lee Broom and Tom Dixon: To enhance the overall ambience and highlight key design elements, we incorporated carefully selected lighting fixtures by renowned designers Lee Broom and Tom Dixon. These lighting pieces not only provide functional illumination but also serve as stunning art installations, adding an extra layer of sophistication and visual interest to the space.
  • Versatile Entertainment Zones: The living area was designed to accommodate various forms of entertainment, from movie nights to hosting guests. Comfortable seating arrangements, statement lighting fixtures, and a media centre were incorporated, creating a versatile space for relaxation and socialising.
  • Dedicated Hobby Corners: Personalised hobby corners were created to suit our specific interests, whether it be reading, crafting, or exercising. These areas were designed with bespoke storage solutions, ensuring easy access to materials and equipment, while maintaining a visually pleasing and organised space.
  • Pet-Friendly Design: Custom spaces and furniture were created for their cat, Rocky. These included strategically placed perches to accommodate Rocky’s needs while seamlessly blending with the overall design aesthetic.
  • Designer Furniture: To elevate the contemporary ambience, we selected designer furniture pieces that complemented our style preferences. From iconic mid-century modern tables to sleek Scandinavian-inspired chairs, every piece was carefully chosen to add sophistication and visual interest to the interior.
  • Open Plan Living: This design approach allowed for easy movement and interaction, enhancing the functionality and overall appeal of our home.
