Doing the Interior design for an independent retailer in Edinburgh, especially one that is much loved by parents and children was a real pleasure and challenge.

At the end of 2017, I was approached by the owner of Maddie and Mark’s shoes to help them redesign their two shops. They are an independent retailer in Edinburgh providing quality children’s shoes as well as fitting to make sure the little feet get the most comfortable footwear.

The brief was to create a gender-neutral space in keeping with the brand values. To improve and refresh the look of the shops. The timescale was very short, everything had to be done over the Christmas holidays when both the stores where shut.

The shops located in Blackhall and Brunsfield after 10 years of trading needed a new, contemporary look. The inspiration came from the brand colours and we decided to keep the look fresh. We used a cloud mural in both shops replacing the pink and black damask wallpaper which immediately gave the shops brighter appearance.

Before and after images

The pink and black damask wallpaper was replaced by a bright sky mural
We replaced the unused slatwall at the front of the counter and replaced it with blackboard. The super creative staff can write the latest offers there.

All the walls and most of the fittings were repainted in white, grey and black chalkboard. We re-upholstered all the seating in neutral grey.  Supplied new seating for the middle of the shops in the brand colours (blue and pink).

The shop layout was already good so we just added some extra bits to smarten things up. For example, the clipboard for displaying the photos of babies their first shoes. We supplied lower display tables at the front of the shops which opens up the room. This gives better visibility and shoppability to the whole shop.

We looked at the whole space and made sure that every nook and cranny is used either for display or promoting the brand. There are some cool looking hooks, blackboard areas where the creative Maddie and Mark’s staff can inform customers about latest offers.

We updated the walls with on-trend prints and inspiring children’s quotes. The new funky lighting pendants in the windows of the Brunsfield brighten up even the dullest day.
