January is when lighting really matters.
The festive glow has faded, evenings are long, and we instinctively look for softer, more flexible ways to light our homes and hospitality spaces. This is where portable rechargeable lamps come into their own.
As an interior designer, I use them constantly. They work across residential and commercial interiors, require no wiring, and instantly add atmosphere. I also love how sculptural many of today’s designs are. They function as objects as much as light sources.
Here are the designer portable lamps I keep returning to, all available through Holloways of Ludlow and Heal’s, a couple of my trusted suppliers.
Martinelli Luce Mini Pipistrello
Portable Rechargeable Lamp in Agave

This has been my number one portable lamp for a long time.
Originally designed in 1965 by Gae Aulenti, the Pipistrello is an icon of Italian lighting design. The Mini portable version retains all the drama of the original, with the added bonus of being rechargeable and easy to move.
The agave green finish is beautifully calming and works particularly well with timber, stone and muted wall colours. It’s sculptural when switched off and softly glamorous when lit.
Still firmly at the top of my wish list.
Kattell Mini Planet
Kartell Mini Planet Rechargeable Portable Lamp – Crystal

This is a genuinely charming lamp.
The Mini Planet has a playful, rounded form that makes it easy to place on bedside tables, shelves or window ledges. It’s available in three finishes, which makes it adaptable across different interior styles.
I often use lamps like this as accent lighting rather than task lighting. They add warmth, character and softness to a space without overpowering it.
DCW Éditions Knokke
Sculptural Portable Rechargeable Lamp

This one feels very aligned with my design style.
The Knokke lamp is architectural, sculptural and intentional. It works beautifully in refined residential interiors but would be equally striking in cafés, hotels or retail spaces where lighting is part of the visual language.
It’s a piece that doesn’t disappear into the background and I’m very keen to specify it in an upcoming project.
Masiero Ginger
Marset Ginger Portable Rechargeable Table Lamp – Oak and white

The Ginger lamp is elegant and versatile.
Available in four finishes, it works wonderfully on dining tables, both at home and in restaurant settings. The light sits comfortably at eye level, creating atmosphere without glare, which is crucial in hospitality interiors.
This is a lamp that quietly does its job while looking beautiful.
Masiero Sips LED
Marset Sips LED Portable Rechargeable Table Lamp – Chocolate and gold

Love it or hate it?
This is the one I can’t quite decide on.
Its inverted form feels unusual and slightly challenging. In the right interior, it could feel contemporary and clever. In the wrong one, possibly confusing.
I’d love to know your thoughts. Is it inspired or awkward?
Addison Ross Bobbin Portable Lamp
Addison Ross Bobbin Portable Rechargeable Lamp – Orange

I’m completely drawn to the shape and colours of this lamp.
The orange finish feels joyful and confident, proving that portable lighting doesn’t have to be neutral. It’s a great option for lifting darker winter interiors or adding contrast to calm, muted spaces.
&Tradition JH27 Setago
&Tradition JH27 Setago Portable Rechargeable Lamp – Maroon & grape

This is the lamp I own and use daily.
Simple, beautifully proportioned and incredibly liveable, the Santiago works almost anywhere. Once you start using portable lamps like this, it’s very tempting to add another. I’m already considering it.
New Works Kizu
New Works Kizu Portable Rechargeable Table Lamp – Rosso Levanto Marble

The Kizu lamp is quietly luxurious.
With its rounded form and six marble finish options, it feels refined and tactile. It works particularly well in boutique hotels, bedrooms and intimate hospitality settings where materials matter.
It’s a lamp that feels considered rather than decorative.
Why portable rechargeable lamps work so well
Portable lighting gives you freedom.
No wiring. No fixed decisions. Just light where you want it, when you want it.
I use portable rechargeable table lamps constantly in my interior design projects, from homes to cafés and hotels. They are ideal for January, but they earn their place all year round.
If you’d like to go deeper into how lighting shapes mood, atmosphere and functionality, I explore this in detail in my Lighting Design ebook, where I share practical guidance on layering light, choosing the right fittings and creating warm, balanced interiors.

All of the lamps featured here are available via Holloways of Ludlow, a brand I regularly specify and genuinely recommend.
If you’re considering adding one to your interior, start with how you want the space to feel, then choose the lamp that supports that mood.
And if you have a strong opinion on the Masiero Sips, I’d love to hear it.
