Edinburgh is a city rich in history, culture, and charm, making it a prime destination for travellers. Designing a short-term rental that stands out requires a thoughtful approach that balances aesthetics, comfort, and practicality. This case study explores how Skela Studio transformed a rental property for an international client, showcasing our creative process and design expertise.

Bringing a Vision to Life from Afar
When our client, based abroad, purchased a period property in the heart of Edinburgh, they wanted to create a stylish and inviting space that would appeal to discerning travellers. Without being physically present, they entrusted Skela Studio to bring their vision to life. Through virtual consultations, detailed mood boards, and 3D renderings, we ensured that every design decision was aligned with their expectations.
Beyond design, I we project-managed the entire process, collaborating closely with property managers and coordinating with trusted trades to ensure a smooth and efficient transformation. From overseeing renovations to sourcing bespoke furnishings, antique books, and artwork from Scottish artists, every detail was handled meticulously. Everything was completed in a timely manner, ensuring the property was ready for the client’s first visit from abroad, allowing them to experience it firsthand.

Key Design Strategies for a Memorable Stay
1. Emphasising Local Character
One of the most effective ways to create a unique rental experience is by embracing the location’s character. We incorporated traditional Scottish elements, such as heritage-inspired textiles, locally crafted furnishings, and soft, warm lighting to enhance the sense of place.
2. Blending Style with Functionality
A great rental space should be both beautiful and practical. We selected durable yet elegant fabrics, multi-purpose furniture, and clever storage solutions to maximise space. Every detail, from the plush bedding to the curated artwork, was chosen to create a seamless and inviting atmosphere.
3. Thoughtful Lighting for Ambiance
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood. We layered different light sources—soft overhead lighting, wall sconces, and stylish table lamps—to create a warm and welcoming ambience. Adjustable lighting allowed guests to personalise their environment, whether for work or relaxation.
4. Enhancing Comfort with Textures and Layers
To ensure a cosy and luxurious feel, we used a mix of rich textures—velvet cushions, wool throws, and high-thread-count linens. This layering of textures adds depth to the design and enhances the sensory experience of the space.

5. A Book Lover’s Dream
Our client is a passionate book lover, and we incorporated this into the design. I personally selected bookshelves, antique books to add character, cooking books for the kitchen, and bespoke artwork sourced from a variety of Scottish artists. These thoughtful touches make the space feel both curated and personal, offering guests an enriching experience during their stay.
6. Adding Colour to Bring the Space to Life
Many of the rooms initially felt neutral and lacked warmth, so we carefully introduced colour to create a more inviting atmosphere. Soft blues and greens were used in the bedrooms to promote relaxation, while rich, warm tones in the living areas added depth and character. This strategic use of colour helped to enhance the overall aesthetic and create a welcoming environment for guests.

7. Preserving the Georgian Heritage
As the property is a Georgian home, we ensured that all design elements respected its historical integrity. Every historical feature was carefully renovated to maintain the period charm, from intricate cornicing to original fireplaces. We selected furnishings and finishes that complemented the Georgian style while introducing contemporary comforts, achieving a seamless blend of old and new.

Final Outcome: A Unique and Inviting Space
The completed project reflects a seamless blend of sophistication and comfort, tailored for short-term guests seeking a memorable stay in Edinburgh. By focusing on detail, creativity, and an intuitive sense of space, we transformed the property into an inviting retreat that resonates with its surroundings.
A Satisfying Conclusion
The project was completed on schedule, allowing the client to experience their beautifully transformed property in person for the first time. Their positive feedback and the 5-star review they left on Google were incredibly rewarding, reinforcing our commitment to excellence in design and project management.
